Spreadsheets vs Vortex Raid Tool
Most councils start on a Google Sheet, and for good reason: it is free, everyone can read it, and the formula is exactly what the officers agreed. It breaks in the same places every time. Somebody has to type attendance after every raid, parses are copied by hand or not at all, the loot tab drifts from what actually dropped, and when the person who owns the formula quits, nobody dares touch it.
Vortex Raid Tool is that sheet with the typing removed. Attendance, parses and consumables come from Warcraft Logs every night. Loot comes from the loot addon through the uploader. Wishlists come from the raiders in Discord. The formula sits in a settings page with the weights visible to everyone, and the Loot rules page explains the numbers in plain words.
| A spreadsheet | Vortex Raid Tool | |
|---|---|---|
| Attendance | typed after every raid | ✓ from the Warcraft Logs report, benches and tentatives handled |
| Parses and consumables | copied by hand, if at all | ✓ read every night; effort counted only on kills a raider was there for |
| Loot received | typed from memory or a screenshot | ✓ read from RCLootCouncil, Gargul, CEPGP or DKP addons |
| Wishlists | a tab raiders forget to update | ✓ /wish in Discord, locked per phase, crossed off when won |
| The formula | one person's cells | ✓ weights on a settings page, history on the Loot rules page, worked out again with every update |
| After the raid | a log link pasted in Discord | ✓ a page for every raid night: kills against your fastest, wipes and deaths. On Pro, with your guild's own free Warcraft Logs client, consumables boss by boss, jobs done and avoidable damage too |
| When a drop lands | scroll, sort, argue | ✓ the council page: claimants, standings, what winning does to each rank |
| Raid assignments | another sheet, filled in before the raid | ✓ generated from your signups (ours or Raid-Helper's), pull cards in Discord, live rework |
| At the pull | alt-tab to the sheet, or a printout | ✓ a free in-game addon: your own jobs for the boss you are on, with the room picture beside them |
| Who can craft what | a professions tab somebody updates | ✓ the addon's Professions tab: every craft, who in the guild can make it and what it needs, kept current by everyone who runs it, with no sheet at all |
| Who can see what | share links | ✓ Discord login; pages open per role (raider, officer, guild master) |
| Price | ✓ free | free tier; Pro $5 a month or $49 a year, 14-day trial |
What the sheet does better
- Any formula you can imagine. Vortex Raid Tool scores attendance, performance and effort with adjustable weights and loot debt tiers; if your council wants something else entirely, the sheet stays more flexible.
- Free, forever.
Moving over
- Bring the sheet's history along: the loot tab imports on the Loot history page, and Warcraft Logs already holds the attendance and parses.
- Set the weights on the settings page to match what the officers agreed, then let the Loot rules page explain them.
- Keep the sheet read-only for a month next to the tool and compare the standings. That is how Vortex did it.
